Juneteenth celebration June 15 in Durham, NC


Looking for something to do this Saturday then attend the 9th Annual NC Juneteenth Celebration on the CCB Plaza located at 201 N. Corcoran Street(downtown Durham) from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with opening ceremony including songs, prayers, litany, elected officials and clergy, saluting elders and much more.  Admission to the event is FREE!  Celebrate Durham’s African American community with motivational speakers, live entertainment, food and vendors.  Youth can enjoy face painting, crafts, games and educational games.  Other events are NC Juneteenth Bridge Builders Youth Luncheon at 10:30 a.m.  (free for youth ages 10-17) this will give men an opportunity to connect with them and future events.  The Unity March will start at 12:30 p.m. to the festival site.  This march is for the eradication of modern-day forms of bondage such as gangs, drugs, high dropout rates, suspension rates and poverty.

Juneteenth is the celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States.  It is also known as the African American Independence Day.  The celebration of Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas, (June 19, 1865) where the word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the enslaved.   North Carolina was the 26th state to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday of observance.  For more information, visit www.spectacularmag.com or call 866-630-3796.
